Lauri Honkavirta is a young-generation harpsichord who follows a path of his own. In this concert, he examines various meanings of ‘touch’. A touch may be physical, it may hurt or move, or it may relate to something (‘touch on’). Lauri’s artistic train of thought is guided by music in the nature of a Toccata (it. toccare, “touch”): “When I touch my musical instrument, it touches me back. When I turn to and interpret the soul-fruits of the composers I love, they, too, bring about changes in me and convert me to their own language.” Lauri here promises a concert of catchy, hypnotic music punctuated by little keyboard sinfonias by Johann Sebastian Bach. Come and open your mind to touch while lazing on a camping mat.

Barocco Boreala, an ensemble that has long been delighting both Ostrobothnian audiences and listeners to its records, is at last making its first appearance in the Helsinki region. The ensemble is skippered by Kreeta-Maria Kentala, winner of many Emma Awards, who will be playing a violin in a programme bringing to life the sparkling, colourful string concertos of Dutch Count Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer.  The ensemble will also be interspersing its playing with some information about the life of this fine mystery composer and the music of his day.

In 1608, English playwright Ben Johnson and composer Alfonso Ferrabosco together created a multimedia spectacle The Masque of Beauty. The Italian was among those introducing Mediterranean virtuosity to the English stage: during the performance, a “loud tenor” sang a piece called So beautie on the waters stood, achieving instant fame! Nicholas Mulroy and Elizabeth Kenny, who have already delighted audiences at previous BRQ Vantaa festivals, now join forces in an exploration of the English and Italian roots of bel cantostyle. The sentiments in the opera will be expressed in this concert in the more intimate partnership of tenor and theorbo. During the evening there will also be a chance to hear the first performance in Finland of a new work for solo theorbo by Nicholas Mulroy.

Otto Tolonen enchanted his listeners at last year’s BRQ Vantaa in a programme of romantic guitar. He has made a name for himself particularly for his victories in international festivals and for his renderings of contemporary music. His repertoire does, however, encompass guitar music right from the Renaissance to the present day. He is now bringing to Vantaa a delicate, colourful selection of works for plucked instrument composed in three centuries. The concert also marks his debut on the vihuela and Baroque guitar in the excellent acoustics of the Church of St Lawrence.

From the 16th-century, when Agricola first translated the Bible into Finnish, to the 1900s, the string instruments in the Bible were almost without exception known as kanteles. The instrument has occupied a highly significant role in Finnish culture: all were familiar with the kantele, few with the harp or lyre. In tonight’s programme, Anna-Liisa Eller transports listeners back to the Renaissance and Baroque on wings of the Estonian kannel. An exotic instrument, the kannel is extremely well suited to early music, maybe because of its heavenly sound.

This concert by Tuuli Lindberg, one of the top Finnish performers of early music, and lutenist Eero Palviainen focuses on the voice of the female narrator in 17th-century French music. The perspective of the early airs de coursongs was almost exclusively male, until the nature of the poetry became more diverse in the latter half of the century. Symbolising the concert programme is the Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado (1640–1723) initially believed to be the writer of Les lettres portugaises in 1669. The texts speak of a woman’s passion, love and disillusionment in a bold new way, lending wings to the social and spiritual emancipation of women at the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment.

A superb vocal ensemble specialising in early music, Gothic Voices pays an imaginary visit to a wedding feast held on New Year’s Eve in the late Middle Ages. The guest of honour is, as a matter of course, the leading composer of his day, Guillaume Dufay, whose motets with their magnificent timbres take pride of place in setting the mood. The works of Dufay are the last dazzling medieval display of Burgundy virtuosity before the eruption of Renaissance art. The concert marks the first visit to Finland of an ensemble, Gothic Voices, that has been reaping world acclaim for thirty years already. Lending wings to the heavenly voices are internationally renowned early music specialists Jane Achtman (fiddle and vihuela d’arco) and Andrew Lawrence-King (keyboard instruments and harp).

The lute was an instrument popular with European monarchs such as France’s “Sun King” Louis XIV in the 16th and 17th centuries, and musicians came to France from all over the continent to be initiated in its secrets. If you have not previously heard of Justin Taylor, you really should come and listen to him in Vantaa! A young harpsichordist-fortepianist, he shot to world fame on winning the first, audience, Alpha and EUBO Developing Trust prizes in the 2015 Harpsichord Competition in Bruges. He has also won top reviews and distinctions for his recordings, such as a Gramophone Editor’s Choice and a Grand Prix from the Charles Cros Academy. In this festival concert, Taylor demonstrates his mastery in a programme of solo works by Scarlatti, Couperin and Rameau.

Maija Lampela, a wizard on the pardessus de viole, brings BRQ Vantaa listeners a rare listening experience. The highest member of the viol family was favoured by noble ladies in 18th-century France, because the Italian violin was considered too masculine for them. The pardessus de viole lies somewhere between a viola da gamba and a violin in tone. This concert by Maija Lampela, Johanna Kilpijärvi and Anna Orasmaa presents both arrangements and original works for the pardessus, thus bringing out the instrument’s light playfulness and charm.

With what passion did the Italian Renaissance rulers look upon music? Capella de Ministrers, one of the leading Spanish early-music ensembles, acts as BRQ Vantaa listeners‘ guide to the heyday of the early Renaissance in the footsteps of Lucrezia Borgia (1480–1519). A Spanish-Italian noblewoman, she was the daughter of the future Pope Alexander VI and her reputation was for centuries poisoned by evil tongues. Though caught up in the political intrigues of her day, she was a member of cultured circles and a lover of music, dance and other arts. Recently awarded an International Classical Music Award for best Early Music Recording (ICMA), Capella de Ministrers is a matchless interpreter of early Mediterranean music.
